Spring 2006 Issue

From the Editor's Desk

We’re Back!

Like the sequel to an adventure film, Mike Belcher and I are returning to edit Security Director Magazine again. Our joint efforts will bring you an exciting, informative and entertaining publication. However, we’re going to need your help to keep it a growing success.

Just look at the size and weight of this Trade Show issue. More and more of your colleagues turn to these pages for the latest information and to prepare for upcoming challenges in their careers. We thank all the organizations that vend to the security industry and demonstrate their support for our Chapter’s work by advertising in Security Director and on the ASIS International New York City Chapter website at asisnyc.org. The growth has been unprecedented.

SECURITY 2006, returning to a one-day event this year, means that we are cramming more information and more opportunities for networking into a significantly shorter time-frame.

Our morning seminar at SECURITY 2006 is on video. It will take us from the VCR to the future of video technology, pretty much painlessly. The objective is to help everyone attending cut through the jargon. Ideally, our presenters and their case studies will help attendees determine just how much and what they need. A modern video surveillance system can help security professionals do their jobs faster, better, and cheaper. What better reason to make the time to attend!

With the Honorable Bridget Brennan being recognized at the Person of The Year at the luncheon in the middle of SECURITY 2006, attendees will be surrounded by more influential public sector leaders and private sector executives than they are likely to find at any other event on the east coast.

The afternoon exhibit hall is host to prize drawings and an opportunity to research new products from vendors and network with colleagues. There is even and a special cocktail hour at the close of the day.

SECURITY 2006 is really a “Be There or Be Square” event!

So what are we counting on you to contribute for future successes: writing about your experiences!

For the summer issue of Security Director we welcome your input on Terrorism Awareness. In the five years since the downing of the Twin Towers and the gut punch delivered to our City and country, many organizations have changed their perspective on security long-term. Others have returned to pre-9/11 levels of protection and some have
paid lip-service only to the prospect of potentials for new devastation.

If security is your ‘bag’, let us all in on what has changed where you are involved in protecting people places and things. Certainly, anyone who rides the subways in NYC, knows that two police officers in a station is no longer unusual. And seeing other officers periodically get on and ride trains with passengers for a few stops, as they walk through the cars, has become the norm rather than a surprise event.

Is your organization protecting critical infrastructure? Is your organization now more global in its reach than at the beginning of the 21st Century? What new wrinkles have been added to the security issues you address every day?

Even if you cannot tell us the specifics about your company or agency, there is information that would be helpful to share with fellow security professionals. There are new areas that we all need to get in focus. So, camouflage the particulars, but don’t squelch the content.

Just to give some guidelines, we try to avoid printing or re-printing press releases from government agencies containing general information already sent to newspapers and other media. It doesn’t help any of us do our jobs better.

If you have an idea for a piece or a theme, and haven’t contributed before, now is the time to get started. Drop us an e-mail or give us a call. We will work with you to develop your ideas into articles you’ll see in this magazine! After all, it is all about you!

Yours Securely,
Erica & Mike
