A Meeting With Congressman Peter King
By Oksana Farber
On Wednesday, January 18, 2006, the Honorable Representative Peter T. King of Congressional District Number 3 of New York met with several ASIS representatives and Nassau County law enforcement officials for a presentation of Police Commissioner James Lawrence’s Security / Police Information Network (SPIN) Program.
The Congressman learned about ASIS’s proactive, consistent and effective involvement in assisting Nassau County in the development, launch and success of the SPIN Program.
Rep. King, who is the Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, listened attentively as Commissioner Lawrence, Inspector Matt Simeone and Sgt. Bill Leahy outlined the program. They attested to SPIN’s ongoing success by the additional establishment of a SPIN Advisory Council, which consists of leadership from both the private and public security arenas. This council collaborates monthly to enhance security awareness in the community by providing various venues for training and education.
Oksana Farber, member of the ASIS International Law Enforcement Liaison Council and a member of the SPIN Advisory Council, explained how the private sector enthusiastically contributed to the development of SPIN and how the police department’s leadership helped create an effective network. Farber described SPIN as a “thriving best practice.”
Jack Lichtenstein, ASIS International Director of Government Affairs & Public Policy, outlined the potential of the SPIN Program as a “national model for partnering between the public and private security sectors.” Lichtenstein also described the program’s national implications, immediate benefits of its success, and long-term benefits for crime prevention, anti-terrorist exercises, business continuity plans, and disaster-recovery communications.
James Reed, Deputy Commissioner, Nassau County Office of Consumer Affairs, and Government Liaison for the ASIS Long Island Chapter, also attended. Reed was instrumental in coordinating the meeting with Rep. King.
The Congressman, who is the Long Island Chapter’s 2006 Person of the Year, was very interested in learning more about SPIN and agreed to attend a SPIN monthly meeting as guest speaker.
